“Eventually, it will turn their way”, said Colorado head coach Jon Embree after Colorado lost its seventh game in a row, falling 42-17 to No. 21 USC.
Trojan quarterback Matt Barkley threw for a school record six touchdowns as USC used a 21-point second quarter to pull away from the Buffs. Colorado running back Rodney Stewart, out for the previous three games, made a successful return, with 88 yards rushing and 67 yards receiving, but the Colorado offense overall continued to make crucial mistakes at critical times, preventing the Buffs from keeping the game competitive.

— November 15th – at Iowa State Colorado 44, Iowa State 10 — Colorado extended its road winning streak against Iowa State to ten games in routing the Cyclones in Ames, 44-10. Joel Klatt threw for two first half touchdowns, and Brian Calhoun scored on two short runs as the Buffs raced to a 37-0 halftime lead before cruising to the win. Just over six minutes into the game, the Buffs were on the scoreboard. A 42-yard scoring pass from Klatt to D.J. Hackett gave Colorado an early 7-0 lead. …

— October 16th – at Texas Tech Texas Tech 31, Colorado 10 — Who needs Ricky Williams? Not Texas Tech. With their star running back out for the season, the Red Raiders, just 2-3 on the year, seemed vulnerable. Colorado, with a 3-2 record, a 2-0 mark in Big 12 play, had fresh momentum after an overtime win over Missouri. Colorado seemed to be primed to take out Texas Tech, leaving the Red Raiders to contemplate a season of what “might have been” had Williams stayed healthy. Instead, it was Colorado which looked …

— September 18th – Boulder Colorado 51, Kansas 17 — Colorado continued to distance itself from the opening game debacle against Colorado State, raising its record to 2-1 (1-0 in Big 12 play) by dismantling Kansas, 51-17. Scoring over 50 points in consecutive games for the first time since 1923, the Buffs scored on their opening drive and never looked back. By halftime, CU was up 30-3, cruising to the Buffs’ 16th straight Homecoming victory. Mike Moschetti continued his exceptional play, completing 17 of 22 passes for 216 yards and two …

— October 15th – at Iowa State Iowa State 22, Colorado 10 — Playing in a gusty wind, the Iowa State Cyclones blew away the bumbling Buffs, 22-10. The Iowa State homecoming crowd was sent home happy, as for the third straight game the Colorado offense had great difficulty in finding the opposition’s goal. Lee Rouson was switched from fullback to halfback for the game to try an add a spark to the offense. Rouson responded with 93 yards, but it took 29 carries to produce those yards. Steve Vogel …

— Taking the LSAT — The University of Colorado had never played the University of Notre Dame in football. This simple statement, in and of itself, was enough to raise anticipation level for the matchup between the Buffs and the Irish. But there was also this: heading into the October 1, 1983, Colorado/Notre Dame game in Boulder, Colorado was 2-1; Notre Dame 1-2. As a result, there was excitement across the Boulder campus not only about the possibility of playing Notre Dame, but about the possibility of actually beating the Irish. It would …

— 1983 Preseason — While it was certainly true that Colorado, with a 2-8-1 record in 1982, was mired in a four-season long slump without a winning season, there was still reason for optimism in Boulder as the 1982 season came to a close. There had been moments in 1982 – a 12-0 shutout of Washington State in the second game of the season (and on the road!); a record-setting passing day of 361 yards against Nebraska (and trailing only 20-14 at the start of the fourth quarter!); a comeback …

— October 16 – at Oklahoma State Colorado 25, Oklahoma State 25 — It is hard to imagine that anyone would have a revenge factor in playing the Buffs in the early 1980’s, but that is what the Oklahoma State Cowboys were playing for in 1982. Colorado had come from behind for an improbable, last second 11-10 win in 1981 in Boulder. Now it was Oklahoma State’s turn to right the wrong. Everyone else was getting healthy playing the powder-blue Buffs, and the homecoming crowd …

— September 25th – Boulder Wyoming 24, Colorado 10 — While Colorado and its neighbor 100 miles to the north hadn’t played since 1975, there seemed little reason for the Buff faithful to be concerned about continuing the domination Colorado had over the Wyoming Cowboys from the Western Athletic Conference. After all, a Colorado football team hadn’t lost to Wyoming since 1935, with an overall record of 21-1-1 against the Cowboys. But this was 1982, and there were no certain wins. Colorado had its chances, as Wyoming turned the ball over …

— September 18th – at Spokane Colorado 12, Washington State 0 — Colorado shut out an opponent for the first time since 1977, and won on the road for the first time in two years, defeating Washington State 12-0 in Spokane. It did not make up for the 14-10 “loss snatched from the jaws of victory” that the Buffs had endured the year before against Washington State, but it did give head coach Bill McCartney his first victory as a collegiate head coach, and squared his record as the …
