— CU/Nebraska Pregame – Worth the Trip? — When the Big 12 was formulated, Nebraska was left with a dilemma. Gone from the schedule was the traditional Thanksgiving weekend game against Oklahoma, now of the Southern Division. Rather than give up the money and exposure of the high-profile game, Nebraska agreed to make Colorado its new season-ending competition. The first game, the 1996 17-12 Husker victory in Lincoln, proved worthy of the special time slot. The first such contest in Boulder did not seem to merit any hype. Nebraska …

— September 13th – at Michigan No. 14 Michigan 27, No. 8 Colorado 3 — Hail, No! During the week leading up to the rubber game of the three-game match between Colorado and Michigan, much was made of the first two games in the series. The Hail Mary pass from Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook in 1994 received considerable air time, as did the “Fail Mary” pass thrown by quarterback Koy Detmer to end the 1996 Michigan game. For an intersectional contest being played for only the fourth time (Michigan defeated …

Preseason – 1997 Unlike 1996, when two-time defending national champion Nebraska was the undisputed choice for the No. 1 team in the nation, there was little consensus as to who would finish as the No. 1 team at teh conclusion of the 1997 season. Florida was given by some an excellent chance at repeating, but there were also those who found merit in the chances of others. Penn State, Washington, Tennessee, Florida State, Nebraska, North Carolina, and yes, even Colorado, received votes for No. 1 in the Associated Press preseason …

— Adios, Southwest Conference — Quick – Name the last eight members of the Southwest Conference. Not so easy, is it? Entering the 1994 season, the long-anticipated demise of the SWC became official. The 1994 and 1995 campaigns would be the last for the storied conference. After 80 seasons, the Southwest Conference would fold up its tents; its teams left to a new future. Arkansas, the only Southwest member outside of the state of Texas, had defected to the Southeastern Conference in 1990. Now Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas …

— September 4th – Boulder No. 11 Colorado 36, Texas 14 — In 1989, the Colorado Buffaloes opened their memorable 11-0 regular season with a 27-6 thrashing of the Texas Longhorns. After a convincing 36-14 win over Texas to kickoff the 1993 campaign, the Buff fans could realistically hope that history would repeat itself. A national ESPN television audience and a sell-out crowd of 52,125 looked on as Kordell Stewart threw for 246 yards and three touchdown passes to lead the Buffs. Stewart opened the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown pass …

— September 12th – at Baylor No. 12 Colorado 57, Baylor 38 — Heading off to Waco for the second game of the 1992 season, there was no chance Colorado was going to take the Baylor Bears lightly. Baylor had defeated the Buffs 16-14 at Folsom Field in 1991, led by quarterback J.J. Joe’s 301 yards of total offense. Traveling to Waco for only the third time in school history, Colorado exacted a measure of revenge for the 1991 upset in routing the Bears, 57-38. Kordell …

— September 17th – at Iowa Colorado 24, No. 19 Iowa 21 — In pulling off Colorado=s first road win over a ranked team in CU’s seven seasons under Bill McCartney, the Buffs gave notice of their potential, upsetting Iowa, 24-21. Quarterback Sal Aunese plunged in from a yard out with 1:55 remaining to cap an 85-yard drive to give the Buffs the win. The final drive began with less than six minutes remaining after safety Dave McCloughan forced a Chuck Hartlieb fumble at the Colorado 15-yard line. On third-and-nine early …
