— September  3, 2005 – Boulder           Colorado 31, Colorado State 28 — For the fourth year in a row, the “Rocky Mountain Showdown” between Colorado and Colorado State came down to the final minute of play. For the third year in a row, the Buffs prevailed. Colorado opened its 2005 campaign by defeating the Rams, 31-28, before a sweltering Folsom Field record crowd of 54,972. Mason Crosby connected from 47 yards out with four seconds remaining to give the Buffs the victory. Unlike 2003 and 2004, when the Buffs watched double digit …

— Preseason – 2005 — Despite winning the Big 12 North Division title three of the previous four years, and despite having 17 starters returning, the Colorado Buffaloes entered the 2005 season in search of national recognition. The titles of the past and the promise of the future were offset by a lack of overall success. After all, it was argued, the Buffs finished only 8-5 overall in 2004, had played in a lackluster division, and had backed into the 2004 title with a 4-4 conference record when Iowa State failed …

  —  September 4th – Boulder          Colorado 27, Colorado State 24 — A pitch from Colorado State quarterback Justin Holland to running back Tristan Walker was stopped at the Colorado three-yard line by defensive backs  J.J. Billingsley and Lorenzo Sims as time expired, preserving a wild 27-24 Buff win. The frenetic finish, before a record Folsom Field crowd of 54,954, gave Colorado head coach Gary Barnett and his players something other than scandal to talk about for the first time in 2004. — Colorado State – The rivalry lesson — Colorado State in Fort Collins is only 40 miles from Boulder, but, from the perception of most Buff fans, it may have well have been 4,000. Boulder is cosmopolitan; Fort Collins is a cow town. Colorado was Big 12; CSU was in the wacky WAC. The Buffs play for the national championship; the Rams play for respect. With Colorado State coming to Boulder for the 1997 season opener, there was cause for concern. CSU was led by fifth-year head coach Sonny Lubick, easily the most …

— September 7th – at CSU          No. 5 Colorado 48, Colorado State 34 — The Buffs’ in-state rival from Fort Collins was more cause for concern than had been Washington State in the opener. Under the leadership of head coach Sonny Lubick, the Rams had posted an 8-4 record in 1995, repeating as Western Athletic Conference Champions. The Buffs were traveling to Fort Collins for the first time since 1988, and would participate in only the third night game (8:00 p.m. kickoff) in the 28-year history …

— Walter Mitty and Me In the Buffalo Sports News the week after the Wisconsin game, there was a photo of Rick Neuheisel being carried off of the field by his players after the opening game rout of Wisconsin.  The scoreboard, with the final of 43-7 well-illuminated, is in the background.  In the photo, Neuheisel eyeing someone in the stands with his arm and index finger raised – No. 1.  Perhaps it was for the first win of his coaching career, or where the brash young coach felt the Buffs …

— September 5th –Boulder          No. 12 Colorado 37, Colorado State 17 — The 1992 season-opener had all the makings of a disaster. The Colorado/Colorado State game was the renewal of an intra-state rivalry, which always meant a hard-fought game.  In addition, the Buffs were risking state and national embarrassment if their new offense failed to produce against a Colorado State squad which had stumbled to a 3-8 record in 1991. To the relief of many Buff fans, though, the Colorado offense did not disappoint.  Head Coach …
