— National and Big Eight Recap – 1995 — In 1995, the Nebraska Cornhuskers repeated as National Champions, dominating the Florida Gators 62-24 in the National Championship game played at the Fiesta Bowl. Previously unbeaten Florida came into the contest with an air attack led by record-setter Danny Weurffel. Head coach Steve Spurrier had his “Air Spurrier” offense on track until it ran into a buzzsaw of a defense in Nebraska’s “Blackshirts”. Nebraska was led by quarterback Tommie Frazier, who led the Cornhuskers to a 12-0 record, but could not …

— A bowl game against Notre Dame – An Afterthought, but still fitting — It would have been appropriate for Bill McCartney to go out playing for the National Championship. The 24-7 loss to Nebraska, however, eliminated the possibility, as Nebraska ran out the string and headed off to the Orange Bowl undefeated and ranked No.1 in the country. By the time the bowl matchups were announced, CU was ranked 4th, trailing only Nebraska, Penn State, and Miami. Such high standing would normally afford the Buffs a worthy New Year’s …

— November 19th – Boulder No. 7 Colorado 41, Iowa State 20 — A game between a 9-1 team and an 0-9-1 to finish off the regular season would normally not bear much attention. The 41-20 final score, after the Buffs nursed a 20-13 lead into the fourth quarter, would not have merited much notice nationally. For local writers, though, the game could presented a year’s worth of headlines: “Christian Fauria snares six catches; becomes Big Eight all-time tight end reception leader” would have been apropos; “CU posts 576 …

— November 5th – Boulder No. 7 Colorado 17, Oklahoma State 3 — The main distraction for the Colorado Buffaloes for Homecoming, 1994, was not the Homecoming festivities, nor was it the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Rather, the Buffs greatest concern was lethargy. Oklahoma State was 3-4-1 on the year, with its only wins coming in non-conference contests against the likes of Northern Illinois, Tulsa, and North Texas. The glow of the national spotlight was gone, as, for the first time in a month, CU’s game would not be shown by …

— October 15th – Boulder No. 4 Colorado 45, No. 22 Oklahoma 7 — It was now official. What had been dreamed of since the “Miracle in Michigan” could now be spoken of openly. The Rocky Mountain News banner headline after Colorado dismantled Oklahoma 45-7 before a national ESPN audience said it all: “Buffs make a run for No. 1?”. Not to be outdone, the Denver Post headline proclaimed: “Taking aim at No. 1?”. Before the Buffs took the field to set about …

— Adios, Southwest Conference — Quick – Name the last eight members of the Southwest Conference. Not so easy, is it? Entering the 1994 season, the long-anticipated demise of the SWC became official. The 1994 and 1995 campaigns would be the last for the storied conference. After 80 seasons, the Southwest Conference would fold up its tents; its teams left to a new future. Arkansas, the only Southwest member outside of the state of Texas, had defected to the Southeastern Conference in 1990. Now Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas …

— November 20th – at Iowa State No. 18 Colorado 21, Iowa State 16 — Despite decent weather conditions for late November (41 degrees at kickoff, with no precipitation), only 23,797 bothered to show up in Ames to cheer for the hometown Cyclones (3-7) as they took on the 18th-ranked Buffaloes. That was too bad for Iowa State players, as the home team almost pulled off the upset. Only after defensive lineman Kerry Hicks and cornerback Chris Hudson teamed up to tackle running back Calvin Branch …

— November 13th – Boulder No. 21 Colorado 38, Kansas 14 — Despite their 4-6 record (2-3 in the Big Eight), the 1993 Kansas Jayhawks could not be overlooked. While the Buffs were putting the finishing touches on their 31-14 win over Oklahoma State, the Jayhawks were putting a major scare into the 4th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers. With 52 seconds remaining, Kansas tailback June Henley scored from a yard out to bring the Jayhawks to within a point at 21-20. Rather than play for the tie, Kansas head coach Glen …

— October 23rd – at Kansas State No. 16 Colorado 16, Kansas State 16 — The number 16 proved to be unlucky for the 16th-ranked Colorado Buffaloes as Kansas State kicker Tate Wright connected on a 35-yard field goal with only 21 seconds remaining in the game to enable underdog Kansas State to come away with a 16-16 tie in Manhattan. The improving Wildcats, 5-1 coming into the contest against the Buffs, snapped Colorado’s eight-game winning streak in the series in holding the vaunted Buff …

— October 9th – Boulder No. 20 Colorado 30, Missouri 18 — The Missouri Tigers presented themselves to the Buffs as the perfect opponent to rebound from a two-game losing streak. Missouri was 1-2-1 on the 1993 season, including an embarrassing loss to Texas A & M (73-0) and a 10-10 tie to lowly SMU. Another bonus: the Buffs were coming off of a bye week, and had extra time to re-group and regain focus on the Big Eight conference schedule. After a sometimes impressive, …

— October 24th – Boulder No. 9 Colorado 54, Kansas State 7 — The 9th-ranked Buffs controlled an entire game for the first time in 1992, dominating Kansas State 54-7. Colorado scored early and often, raising the home team total on the scoreboard on seven of its first 11 possessions in cruising to a 30-0 halftime lead before a sold-out Folsom Field crowd of 52,235. The Wildcats, with a respectable 3-2 record coming into Boulder, left town without an offensive touchdown, scoring only on a an interception return after the game …

— 1992 -“Air” Bill — National and Big Eight Recap – 1992 The 1992 college football season was dominated by the Miami Hurricanes. That is to say, at least Miami dominated all the way up to its National Championship showdown against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. There, the Crimson Tide throttled Miami, 34-13, to win Alabama’s sixth national title, the first for head coach Gene Stallings. Alabama finished the season 13-0, claiming the nation’s first undisputed title since 1979. Miami’s quarterback Gino Toretta, despite having a quarterback rating of …
