— Preseason – 2003 — In 2002, the Colorado Buffaloes rallied from a 1-2 start to the season to claim a second consecutive Big 12 North Division title. In 2003, the Buffs would have to make a comeback of another sort. The offense would sport a completely new look, and would be depending upon the CU defense to steady the Buffs’ ship through a tough preseason schedule. On offense, only three starters returned. Gone were All-American running back Chris Brown, four-fifths of the starting offensive line, and two of Brown’s backfield …

— September 7th – Boulder No. 17 Colorado 34, San Diego State 14 — The Buffs survived the loss of quarterback Craig Ochs to injury to win their home-opener against San Diego State, 34-14. Ochs suffered a concussion late in the second quarter and did not return. Senior quarterback Robert Hodge teamed with a “bend-but-don’t-break” Colorado defense in the second half to help the Buffs pull away from the Aztecs. Both teams scored on their opening drives of the game. Ochs hit tight end Beau Williams for a 22-yard score to put the …

National and Big 12 Recap Ohio State won its fifth national title at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, defeating Miami, 31-24, in two overtimes. The 2nd-ranked Buckeyes, 13-point underdogs to the Hurricanes, were led by freshman running back Maurice Clarett. Clarett scored on a five-yard run in Ohio State’s second overtime possession, and when Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete, the 14-0 Buckeyes were the nation’s only undefeated team. In defeating Miami, Ohio State captured its first title – and the Big Ten’s first outright title – in …

— October 28th – Boulder Colorado 37, Oklahoma State 21 — Quarterback Craig Ochs became the first player in Colorado history to run for a touchdown, throw for a touchdown and catch a pass for a touchdown in the same game as the Buffs posted their first easy win of the year, a 37-21 decision over Oklahoma State. Ochs was not content to set just one record versus the Cowboys, however. On the day, Ochs surpassed freshman season records for passing attempts, completions, passing yards and total offense. Ochs completed 21-of-36 …

— October 21st – at Kansas Kansas 23, Colorado 15 — Any delusions Buff fans had that 1-5 Colorado was not a bad football team, but really a good football team which had beaten down by an overpowering early-season schedule, came to a crashing end as 3-3 Kansas handed the Buffs a 23-15 setback. Running back David Winbush, who had set a CU record for opposing rushers with a 268-yard effort in 1998, accounted for 181 yards of total offense as the Buffs once again found a way to lose. The teams traded field …

— October 14th – Boulder No. 25 Texas 28, Colorado 14 — For almost 55 minutes of their game against Colorado, the Texas Longhorns allowed the struggling Buffs to stay in the game. Then, with 5:36 to play, Texas running back Hodges Mitchell, whose two fumbles had allowed the Buffs to keep in close, took a short pass and turned it into a 42-yard touchdown which sealed the 28-14 win for Texas. It should not have been that close. On the fourth play of the game, Colorado receiver Roman Hollowell …

— Recruiting 101 — Signing day, 2000, brought with it more than the usual buzz to Boulder, Colorado. After the 1999 recruiting class imploded due to the uncertainty of a coaching change, head coach Gary Barnett could not afford to have a second consecutive mediocre recruiting crop. Fortunately for the Buffs, Barnett delivered. At the top of the class was all-everything running back Marcus Houston. The Denver (Thomas Jefferson) standout was near the top of nearly every recruiting gurus list of “can’t miss” prospects. In addition to being untouchable on …
