The Seminoles rang in the 2000’s with a 46-29 win over previously unbeaten Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl. With the win, the Seminoles, led by quarterback Chris Weinke and receiver Peter Warrick, not only gave head coach Bobby Bowden his first-ever undefeated season, but claimed their second national title of the decade. Florida State never finished lower than fourth in any final poll …

— November 21st – Boulder No. 11 Colorado 31, Iowa State 10 — Kordell Stewart threw for three touchdowns and 279 yards as the Buffs raced out to a 28-3 halftime lead before cruising to a 31-10 win over Iowa State. The Buffs put the Cyclones on notice early that Colorado would not fall victim to the complacency which had cost the Cornhuskers in a 19-10 upset in Ames the week before. Linebacker Chad Brown recovered a fumble by Iowa State fullback Chris Ulrich on the Cyclones’ first possession. On …

— November 14th – at Kansas No. 13 Colorado 25, No.20 Kansas 18 — The Kansas Jayhawks returned home to Lawrence to face the Buffs after being humbled by Nebraska, 49-7. It was the Jayhawks’ first conference loss after averaging 33 points per game in accumulating four Big Eight wins. With the Buffs’ falling to the Cornhuskers by an equally lopsided score the week before, the Buffs were not in a position to take the Jayhawks lightly. An estimated crowd of 43,000, the largest crowd to witness a Colorado/Kansas game in Lawrence since …

— September 5th –Boulder No. 12 Colorado 37, Colorado State 17 — The 1992 season-opener had all the makings of a disaster. The Colorado/Colorado State game was the renewal of an intra-state rivalry, which always meant a hard-fought game. In addition, the Buffs were risking state and national embarrassment if their new offense failed to produce against a Colorado State squad which had stumbled to a 3-8 record in 1991. To the relief of many Buff fans, though, the Colorado offense did not disappoint. Head Coach …

— Colorado v. Alabama – 1991 Blockbuster Bowl — The 1991 season was a mixed bag for Colorado and its fans. An 8-2-1 regular season record, along with a share of a third consecutive Big Eight title, were certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Still, after posting an 11-1 record in 1989 and an 11-1-1 record in 1990, an eight win season seemed like a letdown to many in the Buff Nation. Still, there were some memorable games in 1991, including a big 34-17 win over Oklahoma in Norman (when the Buffs …

— September 29th – Boulder No. 20 Colorado 20, No.12 Washington 14 — In a battle between two ranked teams in search of national recognition, Colorado held off a late Washington drive to defeat the Huskies in Boulder, 20-14. A defensive first half gave way to a flurry of scoring in the third quarter, with the game ending with the Colorado defense backed up against its goalline. Sophomore cornerback Deon Figures intercepted a Mark Brunell pass in the endzone with only :59 left to play to preserve the Colorado win. …

— November 8th – Boulder Colorado 17, Kansas 10 — In a reverse from the Oklahoma State game the week before, Colorado played well early, then hung on late to post a 17-10 win over Kansas. Rolling to a 17-0 second quarter lead, the Buffs scored on a one yard run by junior halfback Mike Marquez, a 24-yard field goal by Dave DeLine, and a 34-yard reverse by freshman split end Jeff Campbell. The latter score was a reprise of the two reverses Campbell ran so successfully in the Nebraska game. …

— September 27th – Boulder No. 10 Arizona 24, Colorado 21 — A year earlier, the Arizona Wildcats entered the game against Colorado 3-0, only to be stunned by the Buffs, 14-13, in Tucson. In 1986, Arizona, 3-0 once again, came to Boulder determined to record the Wildcats’ first victory over the Buffs in 13 attempts. The tenth-ranked Wildcats would not be denied, though the hard-fought 24-21 win over the Buffs was anything but easy. The Buffs led throughout the game, but Arizona took the lead from the Buffs when …

— 1985 Freedom Bowl — December 30th – at Anaheim, California Washington 20, Colorado 17 Some 30,961 fans, representing all the interest that the 7-4 Buffs and 6-5 Washington Huskies could muster, were witness to an exciting, if not particularly well played, contest in the second-ever Freedom Bowl. Washington coach Don James and his Huskies, with a 20-17 victory, were able to salvage something from a 1985 campaign which had started with great promise. Washington had been rated highly in the preseason polls (6th in UPI; 12th in AP), only to lose …

— October 19th – at Iowa State Colorado 40, Iowa State 6 — What in the name of Fred Folsom was going on? The Colorado Buffaloes, who couldn’t buy a conference win for the first half of the 1980’s, were now making it look easy. A 40-6 romp over Iowa State gave Colorado a 2-0 conference record for the first time since 1971 (the same season the Buffs went on to finish the season ranked No. 3 in the nation), and the Buffs’ largest margin of victory on the road since …

— November 17th – at Kansas State Kansas State 38, Colorado 6 — Kansas State offered the Buffs several opportunities. The first was to finish sixth in the Big Eight, ahead of both Kansas State and Iowa State. The second was to avoid the indignity of joining the 1980 squad as the only ten-loss Colorado team’s in school history. Finally, the game provided the Buffs and their coach the chance to give Coach McCartney and the 1985 Buffs something to build on. None of these opportunities, though, came to fruition, as …
