— October 11th – at Oklahoma State No. 20 Oklahoma State 33, No. 24 Colorado 29 — From a college football fan’s perspective, the 33-29 victory by No. 20 Oklahoma State over No. 24 Colorado was a great game. Plenty of offense, plenty of big plays by the defenses and special teams, numerous lead changes, and a cliff-hanger ending. Enthusiasm of the Oklahoma State homecoming crowd was dampened only by intermittent showers on a 70-degree evening in Stillwater. Colorado struck first, completing an 80-yard drive when Marlon Barnes took a pitch from John Hessler …

— October 4th – Boulder No. 21 Texas A&M 16, No. 16 Colorado 10 — The headlines from the Denver newspapers the morning after the CU-Texas A&M game spoke volumes: “Agg-ony of defeat -CU’s hopes for season go poof” proclaimed the Denver Post; “Feeling Buffa-low – League opening loss to Texas A&M sends Neuheisel searching for answer, offense” charged the Rocky Mountain News. Yes, it was “Agg-ony”, and I was feeling “Buffa-low”. But more than anything, it was frustration. The chances were there to win this game. Rich Coady’s interception …

— September 27th – Boulder No. 16 Colorado 20, Wyoming 19 — Colorado won its Homecoming game for the 14th year in a row, defeating a very game Wyoming Cowboy squad, 20-19. It was one of the most unlikely wins in Colorado history, as the Buffs came from nine points down in the final 4:29 to escape with a much needed win. After Wyoming had scored on an 18-yard run to take a 19-10 lead late, the Buffs needed a big play. The big play came, courtesy of diminutive cornerback …

— September 13th – at Michigan No. 14 Michigan 27, No. 8 Colorado 3 — Hail, No! During the week leading up to the rubber game of the three-game match between Colorado and Michigan, much was made of the first two games in the series. The Hail Mary pass from Kordell Stewart to Michael Westbrook in 1994 received considerable air time, as did the “Fail Mary” pass thrown by quarterback Koy Detmer to end the 1996 Michigan game. For an intersectional contest being played for only the fourth time (Michigan defeated …

— Colorado State – The rivalry lesson — Colorado State in Fort Collins is only 40 miles from Boulder, but, from the perception of most Buff fans, it may have well have been 4,000. Boulder is cosmopolitan; Fort Collins is a cow town. Colorado was Big 12; CSU was in the wacky WAC. The Buffs play for the national championship; the Rams play for respect. With Colorado State coming to Boulder for the 1997 season opener, there was cause for concern. CSU was led by fifth-year head coach Sonny Lubick, easily the most …

Preseason – 1997 Unlike 1996, when two-time defending national champion Nebraska was the undisputed choice for the No. 1 team in the nation, there was little consensus as to who would finish as the No. 1 team at teh conclusion of the 1997 season. Florida was given by some an excellent chance at repeating, but there were also those who found merit in the chances of others. Penn State, Washington, Tennessee, Florida State, Nebraska, North Carolina, and yes, even Colorado, received votes for No. 1 in the Associated Press preseason …

— Holiday Bowl, 1996 — Good Bowl, Good Result The Holiday Bowl was supposed to take the third-place team from the Big 12, after the Cotton Bowl had taken the second-place team. With Texas and Nebraska already in the Bowl Alliance, they would not be considered. This left Colorado, with a 9-2 overall record, and, more imporantly, with 7-1 conference record, as the logical choice for the Cotton. After all, the Colorado Buffaloes were the only team other than Nebraska with fewer than two conference losses. So the Cotton Bowl, of …

— November 9th – Boulder No. 7 Colorado 49, Iowa State 42 — Iowa State brought to Boulder running back Troy Davis, on his way to a season in which he would post 2,185 rushing yards. Iowa State also brought to Boulder a team with a 2-6 overall record. For the Colorado Homecoming game, the Cyclones tried to keep it close, but could not compete with the combination of Detmer and Carruth. Two touchdowns in the final 2:24 of the game by Iowa State gave the final score a dramatic feel, …

— October 26th – Boulder No. 8 Colorado 28, Texas 24 — The Texas Longhorns, who in 1995 closed out the final season of the Southwest Conference with a 10-2-1 record, including a 7-0 record in conference play, bottomed out in 1996 on the last Saturday in October in Boulder, Colorado. After succumbing to the Buffs, 28-24 in Boulder, Texas fell to 3-4 on the 1996 season. No one knew at the time that the next loss for the Longhorns would not come until New Year’s Day in the Fiesta Bowl. Early …

— November 18th – at Kansas State No. 9 Colorado 27, No. 7 Kansas State 17 — The series between Colorado and Kansas State dates back to 1912. The teams had faced each other 50 times previous to the 1995 meeting. The 51st contest, though, would be special. The 1995 match-up represented the first time in the long history of the rivalry in which the Buffs had faced a Kansas State squad ranked in the top ten. An overflow crowd of 42,454 crammed into the 42,000 seats of Kansas State Stadium …

— November 11th – Boulder No. 9 Colorado 21, Missouri 0 — In one of its latest Homecoming dates in school history, Colorado played its final home game of 1995 against a struggling 2-7 Missouri squad which was winless in Big Eight play. A crowd of 50,645 endured some wind gusts of up to 60 mph, but generally enjoyed balmy November temperature readings of over 50-degrees, leaving Folsom Field satisfied with a methodical 21-0 win for the home team. Quarterback John Hessler, who against Oklahoma State had broken the school record …

— November 4th – at Oklahoma State No. 10 Colorado 45, Oklahoma State 32 — Each week of the 1995 season, first year Colorado head coach Rick Neuheisel faced a new and dramatic challenge. The calendar said November 4th was the date scheduled for the 6-2 Colorado Buffaloes to face the 2-7 Oklahoma State Cowboys. Reality and the media, however, knew it was time for Rick Neuheisel v. Bob Simmons, Round One. Bob Simmons had been Bill McCartney’s choice to succeed him as head coach. Mike Hankwitz, who had also been passed …
