— September 2nd – at Denver Colorado State 28, No. 23 Colorado 24 — The third and (at the time) final edition of the Rocky Mountain Showdown produced a close, intense game the promoters had hoped for from the beginning. The 1998 and 1999 Mile High Stadium showcases had resulted in routs, but the 2000 game between Colorado and Colorado State remained in doubt all afternoon, with the CSU Rams coming from ten points down to defeat the Buffs, 28-24. Colorado State senior quarterback Matt Newton had a career day, …

— Preseason – 2000 — Looking forward to the 2000 Colorado football season, the proverbial glass could be seen as either being half empty or half full. On the positive side, the Buffs had played inspired football the second half of the 1999 season, a 7-5 campaign. Colorado endured close losses to two top ten teams, Kansas State and Nebraska, before mauling Boston College in the Insight.com Bowl. Head coach Gary Barnett spoke of how the players had “bought into” the system the second half of his first season, and …

— Recruiting 101 — Signing day, 2000, brought with it more than the usual buzz to Boulder, Colorado. After the 1999 recruiting class imploded due to the uncertainty of a coaching change, head coach Gary Barnett could not afford to have a second consecutive mediocre recruiting crop. Fortunately for the Buffs, Barnett delivered. At the top of the class was all-everything running back Marcus Houston. The Denver (Thomas Jefferson) standout was near the top of nearly every recruiting gurus list of “can’t miss” prospects. In addition to being untouchable on …

— A Good Loss While the Buffs and their fans were still mourning the lost opportunity of the final moments of the Nebraska game, some good did come from the loss. Nebraska had come into the game against Colorado ranked third in the Bowl Championship Series standings, behind only undefeated Florida State and Virginia Tech. The Cornhuskers needed a convincing win over the Buffs, along with a win over Texas in the Big 12 Championship game, to play for the national title. The narrow escape from Boulder virtually eliminated …

— November 26th – Boulder No. 3 Nebraska 33, Colorado 30 OT — The last play from scrimmage in the final Colorado/Nebraska game of the 20th century had the same result as the first play from scrimmage in the final Colorado/Nebraska game of the 20th century – a Nebraska touchdown. Between those two scores, however, was written the script of one of the most memorable contests between the two schools in the 101-year history of the rivalry. Nebraska quarterback Eric Crouch scored on a one-yard sneak in overtime to give the third-ranked …

— November 13th – at Baylor Colorado 37, Baylor 0 — Needing a win to become bowl eligible, the Buffs found the perfect opponent waiting for them on their schedule. The Baylor Bears, under first year head coach, Kevin Steele, were 1-8 on the year. As the record suggested, Baylor was a bad team, and the Buffs did nothing to dispel the opinion, rolling to a 37-0 win. In posting the Buffs’ first shutout since a 12-0 win over Kansas State in 1996, the Colorado defense continued its fine play. The …

— October 9th – Boulder Colorado 46, Missouri 39 (OT) — It took four long hours, but Ben Kelly finally put an end to what he had started. Colorado’s all-everything cornerback/kick returner opened the Missouri game with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
