— November 14th – Boulder Colorado 37, Iowa State 8 — At least some things could be counted upon for the 1998 Buffs. Nursing losing streaks against four of the five members of the Big 12 Northern division, Colorado could at least depend on Iowa State. The Cyclones came to Boulder for the 1998 home finale winless in Big 12 action. The Buffs desperately needed a win to keep their bowl hopes alive, and Iowa State was the perfect opponent. Oft-injured senior tailback Marlon Barnes rushed for a career-high 237 yards …

— September 5th – at Denver Colorado 42, No. 15 Colorado State 14 — Ralphie IV, only 16 months old and a mere 500 pounds, made her debut as the Buffs’ mascot before a crowd of 76,036 in a sold-out Mile High Stadium and a national television audience in the first-ever college football game at Mile High Stadium. The young buffalo looked small and unsure as she made her initial run, but came through nonetheless. The same could be said for the young Colorado Buffaloes. Only 40 of the 102 …

— January 1st – at Miami – Orange Bowl No. 1 Colorado 10, No. 5 Notre Dame 9 — In a game largely devoid of offensive highlights, the Colorado Buffaloes overcame the loss of two key starters to defeat Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl, 10-9. The hard-fought win enabled Colorado to stake a claim to the Buffs’ first-ever national football championship. An Eric Bieniemy one-yard touchdown run tied the score midway through the third quarter, with Jim Harper’s extra point providing the margin of victory. Neither the Buffs nor the …

— September 15th – at Illinois No. 21 Illinois 23, No. 9 Colorado 22 — Howard Griffith scored from a yard out with 1:18 to play to give the Fighting Illini a 23-22 win over Colorado. 21st-ranked Illinois exacted a measure of revenge for the 38-7 pasting the Buffs had put on the Illini in 1989, pulling out the win on a 10-play, 63-yard drive to erase a 22-17 deficit. Quarterback Jason Verduzco did what his famed predecessor, Jeff George, could not – he out-performed the Colorado defense. Verduzco completed 23-of-29 …

— Pigskin Classic — The 1990 season saw the birth of the preseason game known as the “Pigskin Classic”. Played in Anaheim, California, home to the Freedom Bowl and Mickey Mouse, the organizers of the game (officially the “Disneyland Pigskin Classic”) did not want to disappoint their audience, and went out to secure a game bound to attract national attention. In securing two teams which had completed the previous season with 11-1 records, they did just that. The 1989 rise of the Colorado Buffaloes was well documented. Not receiving as much …

— 1990 – A Preview — How things looked in August In 1989, Colorado broke the hold the “Big Two” had maintained over the rest of the Big Eight since 1976. In 1990, there would be plenty of competition for the Big Eight Champions from Boulder, both for conference and national honors. Back in the hunt for the national championship were many of the teams which had vied for the title in 1989. Defending national titleist Miami was the preseason pick by many to finish #1, while 1988 champ Notre …

— November 4th – Boulder No. 2 Colorado 27, No. 3 Nebraska 21 — Jim Nantz, the play-by-play announcer for CBS, introduced the Colorado/Nebraska game to the nation as follows: “Quite simply, there has never been a bigger game in Colorado’s 100-year history than this game today.” After falling behind early, the Colorado Buffaloes played like champions, prevailing over Nebraska, 27-21, taking control of the Big Eight race to the Orange Bowl, and taking dead aim at a national championship. The game began ominously for the Buffs. In each of …

A 74-yard pass from Darian Hagan to wideout Jeff Campbell set up a one-yard scoring run by Eric Bieniemy to give Colorado the early lead, 7-0. — September 9th – Boulder No. 9 Colorado 45, Colorado State 20 — The Colorado State Rams were 1-10 in 1988, and were 0-1 coming to Boulder to face the ninth-ranked Buffs. Still, Colorado State’s opening loss was a 17-14 heartbreaker at Tennessee, and nothing was being conceded by the Rams to their neighbors to the south. Colorado State, under new head coach Earle Bruce, raced out to a 14-7 first quarter lead against the heavily-favored Buffs. It would take an offensive explosion on the part of the Buffs in …
