— October 13th – Boulder No. 20 Colorado 31, No. 25 Texas A&M 21 — Ranked for the first time in season under Gary Barnett, the Buffs endured a late Texas A&M rally to defeat the Aggies on Homecoming weekend, 31-21. With less than a minute to play, the Aggies trailed only 24-21 and had the ball deep in CU territory. A game-tying field goal attempt seemed imminent. Then linebacker Joey Johnson, making his second start in place of injured star Jashon Sykes, scooped up a fumble …

— Camp Rick For his part, Rick Neuheisel, who at 34 was the second youngest head coach in Division 1-A college football (Louisville’s Ron Cooper was all of four days younger), entered Fall Camp, 1995, with optimism and confidence. “I’m prepared for whatever comes along,” said Neuheisel in a pre-season interview with Sports Illustrated. “But I’m not going to over prepare for failure.” The safe road would have been to maintain as much continuity in the program as possible. After all, the players in Boulder were talented; the program in …

— National and Big Eight Recap – 1995 — In 1995, the Nebraska Cornhuskers repeated as National Champions, dominating the Florida Gators 62-24 in the National Championship game played at the Fiesta Bowl. Previously unbeaten Florida came into the contest with an air attack led by record-setter Danny Weurffel. Head coach Steve Spurrier had his “Air Spurrier” offense on track until it ran into a buzzsaw of a defense in Nebraska’s “Blackshirts”. Nebraska was led by quarterback Tommie Frazier, who led the Cornhuskers to a 12-0 record, but could not …

— November 19th – Coach Mac Stuns the Buff Nation — Back from the store In Bozeman, I received updates from ABC and ESPN throughout the afternoon (concerning the 41-20 romp by 7th-ranked Colorado over Iowa State). Frustration with the Buffs’ inability to put away ISU was quickly forgotten when the highlight of Rashaan Salaam’s touchdown run flashed across the screen. The play made for perfect theater. Salaam reached the 2,000 mark at home, running right in front of the CU bench, on a 67-yard touchdown run to clinch the …

— November 19th – Boulder No. 7 Colorado 41, Iowa State 20 — A game between a 9-1 team and an 0-9-1 to finish off the regular season would normally not bear much attention. The 41-20 final score, after the Buffs nursed a 20-13 lead into the fourth quarter, would not have merited much notice nationally. For local writers, though, the game could presented a year’s worth of headlines: “Christian Fauria snares six catches; becomes Big Eight all-time tight end reception leader” would have been apropos; “CU posts 576 …

— September 25th – Boulder No. 3 Miami 35, No. 13 Colorado 29 — The Miami Hurricanes came into the 1993 game against Colorado in Boulder with a 2-0 record, having only surrendered nine points in their first two contests. Miami’s record and dominant defense were not surprises. Over the previous ten seasons, the Hurricanes had posted four national championships, three near-misses, a 107-14 (89%) record, and a Top Ten ranking for 122 consecutive polls. Still, the Hurricanes, like the Buffs, were replacing a number of defensive starters. If the …

— November 17th – at Kansas State Kansas State 38, Colorado 6 — Kansas State offered the Buffs several opportunities. The first was to finish sixth in the Big Eight, ahead of both Kansas State and Iowa State. The second was to avoid the indignity of joining the 1980 squad as the only ten-loss Colorado team’s in school history. Finally, the game provided the Buffs and their coach the chance to give Coach McCartney and the 1985 Buffs something to build on. None of these opportunities, though, came to fruition, as …
