— Colorado v. Syracuse – Fiesta Bowl – January 1, 1993 — Lost Luggage, Lost Jacket, Lost Holiday I had never been to Phoenix before. In fact, unless you count stepping across the state line at the Four Corners area which represents the intersection of the borders of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, I had never been to Arizona before. Coming at the end of December, a trip to the Fiesta Bowl to cap off the 1992 season seemed like a great idea. My trip got off to a …

— November 21st – Boulder No. 11 Colorado 31, Iowa State 10 — Kordell Stewart threw for three touchdowns and 279 yards as the Buffs raced out to a 28-3 halftime lead before cruising to a 31-10 win over Iowa State. The Buffs put the Cyclones on notice early that Colorado would not fall victim to the complacency which had cost the Cornhuskers in a 19-10 upset in Ames the week before. Linebacker Chad Brown recovered a fumble by Iowa State fullback Chris Ulrich on the Cyclones’ first possession. On …

— November 14th – at Kansas No. 13 Colorado 25, No.20 Kansas 18 — The Kansas Jayhawks returned home to Lawrence to face the Buffs after being humbled by Nebraska, 49-7. It was the Jayhawks’ first conference loss after averaging 33 points per game in accumulating four Big Eight wins. With the Buffs’ falling to the Cornhuskers by an equally lopsided score the week before, the Buffs were not in a position to take the Jayhawks lightly. An estimated crowd of 43,000, the largest crowd to witness a Colorado/Kansas game in Lawrence since …

— November 7th – Boulder No. 16 Colorado 28, Oklahoma State 0 — Oklahoma State was a much improved team in 1992. Rebounding from a disastrous 0-10-1 1991 campaign, the Cowboys were a respectable 4-4 coming into Boulder, including conference wins over Missouri and Iowa State. But the Cowboys were the Buffs’ Homecoming opponent for a reason. In 1992, Oklahoma State played its role of sacrificial lamb well, succumbing to the Buffs, 28-0. Colorado posted a touchdown in each quarter, the first coming on a …

— October 31st – at Nebraska No. 8 Nebraska 52, No.8 Colorado 7 — Happy Halloween. Nebraska had not defeated the Colorado Buffaloes since 1988. Still, Colorado, in step with the times, was not resting on past glories. The Buffs had converted to a more-open, air-it-out attack, giving up on the smash-mouth football which was the traditional path to success in the Big Eight. While Colorado was competing for national championships, Nebraska had gone four years without defeating a top ten team, and had won only two of its last …

Colorado scored early and often, raising the home team total on the scoreboard on seven of its first 11 possessions in cruising to a 30-0 halftime lead before a sold-out Folsom Field crowd of 52,235. The Wildcats, with a respectable 3-2 record coming into Boulder, left town without an offensive touchdown, scoring only on a an interception return after the game …

— October 17th – Boulder No. 7 Colorado 24, Oklahoma 24 — In 1952, the Colorado Buffaloes tied mighty Oklahoma 21-21 to mar an otherwise perfect conference run of the Bud Wilkinson Sooners of 1948-57 (a 57-0-1 streak). Forty years later, the Buffs salvaged a 24-24 tie against a 3-2 Sooner squad led by 4th-year head coach Gary Gibbs. Colorado managed to pull out the tie only by scoring 10 points in the final 4:27 of the game. Freshman quarterback Koy Detmer, making his debut as a starter, made quite …

— October 8th – at Missouri No. 9 Colorado 6, Missouri 0 — After an idle Saturday which saw the Buffs rise to a No. 9 national ranking in the polls, the Colorado Buffaloes prepared to do battle against Missouri on a Thursday night game. For the 1992 season, the Big Eight had agreed with ESPN to play a number of conference games on Thursday nights. The Colorado/Missouri game promised national exposure as the only game to be played that day, and the contests provided extra dollars for the conference coffers. …

September 26th – Boulder #10 Colorado 28, Iowa 12 Surviving the Minnesota game allowed Colorado to return to the top ten in the polls for the first time since finishing ranked No. 1 at the end of the 1990 season. Colorado’s final non-conference opponent for the 1992 season was the Iowa Hawkeyes in Boulder. The Hawkeyes had begun the year ranked 16th in the nation, but had fallen out of the polls after succumbing to North Carolina State and co-defending National Champion Miami before rebounding against Iowa State. Iowa …

— September 19th – at Minnesota No. 11 Colorado 21, Minnesota 20 — The third game of Colorado’s 1992 season was played at night (6:00 p.m local time kickoff), and was played indoors (at the Metrodome in Minneapolis). Whether the Buffs were confused by the surroundings or the time of day is unclear, but the 17-0 deficit Colorado found itself in midway through the third quarter was no mistake. The Golden Gophers of Minnesota had dug a very large hole for the visitors from Boulder. Enter …

— September 12th – at Baylor No. 12 Colorado 57, Baylor 38 — Heading off to Waco for the second game of the 1992 season, there was no chance Colorado was going to take the Baylor Bears lightly. Baylor had defeated the Buffs 16-14 at Folsom Field in 1991, led by quarterback J.J. Joe’s 301 yards of total offense. Traveling to Waco for only the third time in school history, Colorado exacted a measure of revenge for the 1991 upset in routing the Bears, 57-38. Kordell …

— September 5th –Boulder No. 12 Colorado 37, Colorado State 17 — The 1992 season-opener had all the makings of a disaster. The Colorado/Colorado State game was the renewal of an intra-state rivalry, which always meant a hard-fought game. In addition, the Buffs were risking state and national embarrassment if their new offense failed to produce against a Colorado State squad which had stumbled to a 3-8 record in 1991. To the relief of many Buff fans, though, the Colorado offense did not disappoint. Head Coach …
