Toledo quarterback Aaron Opelt looked like a Heisman trophy candidate in posting six touchdowns as the Toledo Rockets embarrassed the Colorado Buffaloes, 54-38, before a national ESPN television audience. Opelt connected on 15-of-23 passes for 319 yards, and rand for 109 yards and two more scores as the Rockets posted a mind-numbing 624 yards of total offense.

— September 9, 2006 – at Denver Colorado State 14, Colorado 10 — Colorado State quarterback Caleb Haine ran for one touchdown and passed for another, leading the Rams to a 14-10 win over Colorado in the Rocky Mountain Showdown in Denver. The contest, in which the two teams went for less than 400 yards of total offense combined, broke CU’s three-game winning streak in the series. As had been the case against Montana State the weekend before, the game started out well for the Colorado offense. The Buffs took the …

— September 2nd – Boulder Montana State 19, Colorado 10 — “Quite simply, it was one of the worst losses in CU history”, proclaimed the Boulder Daily Camera after the Colorado Buffaloes lost to the Montana State University Bobcats, 19-10, to open the Dan Hawkins era at Colorado. The University of Colorado had never played a Division 1-AA team since the designation was created was in 1978, and after the Buffs’ offense managed only 216 total yards against the Bobcats, it could be argued that the Buffs might want …

— Preseason, 2006 – A New Coach, but Unchanged Expectations — The Colorado Buffaloes entered the 2006 season with four Big 12 North division titles in the past five seasons. Sustained excellence is usually reason enough to expect national respect for a football program. After all, in Division 1-A football, only two other teams could lay claim to earning that many rings since 2001. One was USC, which had won the Pac-10 four years in a row, and had played for the national championship the previous three. The other …

2004 – “Shoulder to Shoulder” – National and Big 12 Recap National and Big 12 Recap USC, left out of the BCS Championship Game in 2003, left little doubt as to the nation’s best team in 2004, closing out a 13-0 campaign with a 55-19 thrashing of previously unbeaten and 2nd-ranked Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Heisman trophy winner Matt Leinhart led the Trojans with 332 yards passing and five touchdowns in the title game. There was, of course, the annual controversy surrounding the BCS selection process. — Preseason: 2004 – Barnett suspended – A chronology of the recruiting scandal — Preseason – 2004 The setting for Preseason, 2004, for the Colorado Buffaloes had its origins over two years earlier. On December 7, 2001, Colorado football players and recruits attended an off-campus party. At least one woman indicated she was raped at the event, though no sexual assault charges were ever filed. Four players did have their scholarships revoked for providing alcohol to minors at the party. It was this recruiting visit which initiated a firestorm of …

— September 11th – Boulder Colorado 63, San Jose State 35 — What a difference a week makes. After coming perilously close to being shut out by Colorado State, the Buffs responded seven days later with a record-setting performance. Playing on a grass field at home for the first time since 1970, Colorado cruised to a 28-0 first quarter lead on the way to a 63-35 rout of San Jose State. Quarterback Mike Moschetti, criticized for his mistakes against Colorado State, connected on 25-of-35 passes for a school-record 465 yards. …

— October 7th – Boulder No. 24 Kansas 40, No. 4 Colorado 24 — A funny thing happened on the way to Colorado’s battle with Nebraska for the Big Eight title and the right to play in the Fiesta Bowl for the national championship. The schedule called for a game against Kansas. The Jayhawks, the No. 24 team in the nation, came into Boulder and defeated the Buffs for the first time since 1984, taking down No. 4 Colorado, 40-24.
