Colorado wanted a fast start to the first game of the 2016 season.

The 2015 opener against Hawai’i opened with a three-and-out and a blocked punt from the Colorado offense, and the Buffs never really recovered … in that game, or really, the entire season.

Against Colorado State in the 2016 opener, though, the Buffs got off to a fast start, storming out to a 21-0 first quarter lead, never looking back in a 44-7 domination of the Rams.

Sefo Liufau went 23-for-33 for 318 yards and a touchdown, also contributing 66 yards rushing on 14 carries. Phillip Lindsay had 20 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns to lead a 260-yard rushing attack. The receiving corps also failed to post a 100-yard effort, but were more than happy to settle for Bryce Bobo’s 99 yards on five catches, and the 97 yards and a touchdown from Devin Ross.

In all, Colorado went for 578 yards of total offense, holding Colorado State to 225 yards (including only 63 yards passing). The Buff defense forced four turnovers, and surrendered only 12 first downs.

Missed field goals, turnovers, and poor execution in the red zone – issues which had plagued the Buffs all season – turned an otherwise close game into a rout, as No. 24 Washington State defeated Colorado, 27-3. The Cougars out-gained the Buffs, 481 yards to 323, with WSU quarterback Luke Falk going 27-for-35 for 199 yards and a touchdown before being knocked out of the game late in the third quarter.

Cade Apsay, making his first career start, went 26-for-40 for 238 yards, but was intercepted twice, was forced to fall on low snaps, and was sacked three times. Nelson Spruce collected 10 catches for 120 yards, and Phillip Lindsay had 16 carries for 78 yards, but none of the Buffs could come through when it mattered most. The Buffs went 5-of-16 on third downs, and 1-of-5 on fourth downs, falling to 4-8, 1-7 on the season.

Colorado jumped out to a 17-6 halftime lead over heavily favored USC, but could not hold on, as the Trojans ran their all-time record over the Buffs to 10-0 with a 27-24 victory in Boulder.

Red-shirt freshman quarterback Cade Apsay, playing the final three quarters for an injured Sefo Liufau, went 18-for-23 for 128 yards and two touchdowns, but six sacks left the Buffs with a grand total of 59 rushing yards for the game.
