Texas A&M – One Good Quarter Enough For Aggies

Game Archive

Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson was held in check for most of the afternoon by the Colorado defense, but one good quarter was all he needed. Johnson led the Aggies to three touchdowns in the third quarter as Texas A&M came from behind to edge Colorado, 24-17. The Buffs held the advantage in most of the statistical categories, including first downs, total yards, and time of possession, but three turnovers proved costly as CU fell to 4-5 on the 2008 season.

— October 18th – Boulder          Colorado 14, Kansas State 13 — Freshman quarterback Tyler Hansen lost his red-shirt, but gained the adulation of Colorado fans and the respect of his teammates in leading the Buffs to a 14-13 win over Kansas State. Hansen’s passing numbers were modest – 7 of 14 for 71 yards, one touchdown, one interception – but his 98 yards rushing on 19 carries energized a lethargic CU offense, leading the Buffs to their only two scores of the evening. The game against the Wildcats started with …

Colorado played about as wretchedly as a team can for the first 20 minutes of the 2007 PetroSun Independence Bowl against Alabama, but still made a game of it at the end. The Buffs fell behind 27-0 before rallying, coming up just short in a 30-24 loss to the Crimson Tide before 47,043 in Shreveport, Louisiana. The loss left the Buffs with a 6-7 overall record, finishing with a losing record in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1983-‘84.

Colorado evened its season record at 6-6, and its Big 12 mark at 4-4, with a record-setting 65-51 win over Nebraska. The Buffs put up the third highest point total ever against the Cornhuskers over the course of almost four hours before a frigid Folsom Field crowd of 51,403.

With the win (combined with a loss by Kansas State to Fresno State), the Buffs earned a bowl berth in the second season of the Dan Hawkins’ era, while simultaneously helping to seal the fate of Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan, who was dismissed by interim athletic director Tom Osborne the day after the game.

Given that the Nebraska defense came into the game ranked near the bottom nationally in most defensive categories, including rushing defense (114th out of 120 teams), total defense (111th), and scoring defense (105th), combined with a Colorado defensive unit which had surrendered 31 points to Iowa State in the second half of the Buffs’ previous game, predicting a shootout for the season finale was not difficult. The 116 points and 1,128 yards of combined offense, however, was more than anyone could have reasonably foreseen.
