Colorado v. Washington State – Notes worth Noting
– Washington State sophomore wide receiver Marquess Wilson not only leads the Pac-12 in receiving yards per game, with a 143 yard average, he leads the nation (by almost 20 yards over the 2nd-highest average). Colorado sophomore Paul Richardson, at 99.5 yards per game, is fourth in the Pac-12, and 24th in the nation, in receiving yards per game.
– A victory over Colorado would be the 500th in school history for Washington State, with the Cougars trying to become the 72nd FBS team to accomplish that feat (Oregon State, at 0-3, has been stuck on 499 all season). Colorado, for its part, has 672 victories, good enough for 17th on the all-time list.
– Colorado and Washington State have met six times, with the Buffs owning a 4-2 all-time edge. The last meeting was in Seattle, with the Buffs earning a 20-12 victory (click on the Archive Game of the Week on the front page of the website for a recap). Another memorable game in the series for Buff fans occurred in 1982, when Bill McCartney earned his first victory as Colorado head coach with a road win over the Cougars. The series is tied at two games apiece in Boulder, with the Buffs 1-0 in Spokane and 1-0 in Seattle (the Buffs have never played Washington State in Pullman).
– Marshall Lobbestael’s back-to-back 300-yard performances vs. UNLV (361 yards) and San Diego State (368 yards) marked the first time a Washington State quarterback had thrown for over 300 yards in consecutive games since 2007.
– If you are a fan of ESPN’s College GameDay, you know that a Washington State flag is always in the background. Every GameDay, dating back to the 2004 season (108 games in all) has had a Washington State fan their with a Cougar flag. Each game, a fan or alumnus takes the flag to the GameDay set. The holder signs it, and the flag is retired at the end of each season. The flag is known as ‘Ol Crimson and Whitey.
– Colorado is 78-37-2 all-time in conference openers, and 5-2 in openers with a new conference (here is a link to a story about the 1996 Big 12 opener against Texas A&M). The Buffs were 8-7 in openers in the Big 12, after finishing their Big Eight run with seven consecutive victories in the start of conference play. The Buffs have lost four of their last five conference openers, but all five were against ranked teams (three in the top five), with the lone victory the 27-24 victory over Oklahoma in the 2007 Big 12 conference opener.
– Colorado had only 16 rushing attempts against Ohio State, tied for the second lowest rushing attempt total in school history. Only the 1982 game against Iowa State, which featured 14 carries in a 31-14 loss, registered fewer attempts.
– Despite the rash of injuries, the Colorado defense has had seven positions filled by the same player in each of the first four games. Defensive linemen Will Pericak and Conrad Obi, linebackers Josh Hartigan, Doug Rippy, and Jon Major, and safeties Anthony Perkins and Ray Polk, have all started all four games (and are all expected to start against Washington State).
– There is a 2,945-foot elevation difference between Boulder (5,345 feet) and Pullman (2,400).
– Colorado is 13-4 all-time in games played on October 1st, including victories in seven of its last nine games. The last time Colorado played on October 1st was in 2005, when the Buffs opened with a 74-yard touchdown run by Hugh Charles on the first play from scrimmage, and finished with a 99-yard interception return by Marcus Burton in a 34-0 drubbing of Oklahoma State.
Pac-12 Notes of Note
– In addition to Paul Richardson being amongst the leaders in receiving yards, the Buffs’ quarterback and kickers are still amongst the leaders nationally. Senior quarterback Tyler Hansen is fourth in the Pac-12, and 21st nationally, in total offense, at 292.5 yards per game. Freshman punter Darragh O’Neill is fourth in the Pac-12, and 19th nationally, in punting, with a 43.76 yard average. And freshman kicker Will Oliver, still perfect on the season, is tied for second in the league, and tied for 23rd nationally, in field goals, at a average of 1.5 per game.
– While is true that Arizona has lost eight straight games to FBS teams dating back to last season, the Wildcats have played a ranked team in six of those games, with all six opponents ranked 14th or higher.
– Oregon State, in looking for its first win of the season (and 500th overall) is looking to avoid its first 0-4 start since 1996.
– Arizona State, with victories over Missouri and USC, owns two home victories over ranked opponents. The last time that happened was in 1986, when the Sun Devils went on to a victory in the Rose Bowl. The last time ASU had two victories over ranked teams, including road wins, was back in 1997.
– Former Buff Josh Smith had three kickoff returns (for 77 yards) for UCLA against Oregon State last weekend. Smith also had two receptions for 76 yards, including a 62-yard catch-and-run.
– Stanford (3-0) has allowed just two offensive touchdowns this season, and just nine in its last nine games. Stanford has been ranked in the top ten for 11 straight weeks, the longest such run in school history.
– Washington leads the all-time series with Utah by a 6-0 count … but all six games were in Seattle. This weekend, for the first time in school history, the Huskies will visit Salt Lake City.
