Fornelli Top 50 … Buffs drop out of Top 20

From CBS Sports … No disrespect meant to Alabama, but it’s time we start showing Clemson the respect it deserves and ranking it No. 1. My formula certainly agrees this week, but before we get to the Fornelli 50, here’s a quick reminder on how it all works (full details here).

1. My opinion has absolutely nothing to do with the rankings
2. There is true equality to start as math doesn’t play favorites
3. Wins and losses mean more than anything
4. The formula is in no way predictive, it’s a meritocracy
5. I won’t share the formula, but it works

There, now that we’ve gotten all of that out of the way, let’s find out who the best 50 teams in college football are so far this season.

The Pac-12 (with last week’s rating) …

15. Washington … Washington keeps winning, but it just doesn’t look like the same team that I saw last year. (20)

33. Colorado … We probably shouldn’t take too much from wins over Colorado State, Texas State, and Northern Colorado. Now if the Buffs beat Washington… (19)

CBS 1-130 … CU drops out of Top 25

From CBS Sports … The comprehensive college football ranking of all FBS teams, now known as the CBS Sports 130, has been running for a few years. Ballots of CBS Sports and 247Sports writers have provided us with a full view of the sport’s landscape beyond the reach of the weekly top 25 polls.

Never in that time has there been a tie for No. 1 … until now. Though we’ve had different No. 1 teams from the other polls and plenty of tightly contested weeks that indicate a split decision among our experts, there has never been a mathematical tie at the top until now.

Clemson, with its win at Louisville, earned enough No. 1 points from our voters to chase down Alabama for the first T1 in the history of the CBS Sports 130. As Dennis Dodd wrote Saturday night, we’re only three weeks into the season, and it already seems like everyone is ready for Alabama-Clemson III.

Colorado will not play Washington as a ranked team

There was plenty of movement in the Week Four Associated Press poll, but the Buffs barely budged. Colorado did garner the most votes to date, with 93, up from 66 votes last week. Colorado, though, only moved from No. 28 in the poll to No. 27.

Utah entered the AP poll at No. 23, up from No. 26 last week, while Oregon jumped from 30th to 24th.

The Pac-12 finished Week Four with five teams in the poll … USC at No. 5, down one from last week … Washington at No. 7, down one from last week … Washington State at No. 18, up three from last week … with Utah at No. 23 and Oregon at No. 24.

Dropped from the rankings were Stanford, which was at No. 19, and UCLA, which was ranked No. 25.

Behind Colorado in the poll were Cal, at No. 32, and Stanford, at No. 33 (here’s betting there is great joy in Berkeley that the Bears are ranked ahead of the Cardinal). UCLA, meanwhile, disappeared from the poll altogether.

CU up to No. 22 in ESPN Power Rankings

From ESPN … Here’s what we know three weeks into the 2017 season.

Alabama and Clemson, national championship dance partners the past two years, still own the spotlight. Oklahoma is right there, too, led by its break-dancing QB.

And that’s about it, folks.

Oklahoma State, Penn State and Washington have dominated weaklings. USC and Michigan have been tested and not lost but looked shaky at times. Florida State and Miami are talented teams with one-game résumés.

This week, it was tough to fill all 25 spots. Teams needed some combination of excellence, quality wins and, in some cases, no lopsided losses (bye-bye, Bayou Bengals). Vanderbilt and Memphis are ranked, while Tennessee is not. Can you hear those cowbells? Mississippi State debuts at No. 15.

After No. 13, the rankings get weird. But that’s to be expected in Week 3. We should learn much more in Week 4.
