Prime Numbers – 2023
—
A look back at the 2023 season, and some of the numbers generated in the first season under Coach Prime …
Leading off …
Best guess as we await the official opening of the Transfer Portal on Monday … Colorado currently has 64 scholarships for 2024 filled. The Buffs currently have 9 commitments from the Recruiting Class of 2023, which brings the total to 73. That leaves 12 open spots for high school and portal additions … way too few to have a dramatic impact on the 2024 roster. Look for a double digit increase in the number of available scholarships in the next few weeks, which means that a number of 2023 Buffs will be looking to add their names to the Transfer Portal (P.S. Don’t panic).
And this … While it looks alarming that CU lost all three of its Recruiting Class of 2025 commits, bear this in mind (per 247Sports): 25 FBS teams have 3-plus commits for 2025; 11 have two commits; 17 have one commit; and 80 have zero 2025 commits. Moral of the story: It’s early.

Putting 4-8 in perspective …
– The Buffaloes were outscored by 29.1 points per game last year, compared to 6.7 this year. Las Vegas set their over-under total at 3.5 wins coming into the season, and the Buffs surpassed that in early October.
– In the FBS this year, there were 25 teams with first-year head coaches. Only six of the 25 teams had at least a three-win improvement over 2022:
- +6: Northwestern
- +5: South Florida
- +4: Liberty, UNLV
- +3: Colorado, Texas State
From the above, it could be argued that Coach Prime’s three-game improvement wasn’t all that special, but … CU played six ranked teams this past season (it would have been seven had Utah not fallen out of the rankings for the first time all year the week before the CU game). The other five teams listed above … played a combined total of four games against ranked opponents.

On campus impact of Coach Prime (From Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year article) …
First-year applications are up 26.4% year over year at the University of Colorado; Black or African American applications are up 80.6%; nonresident applications are up 29.8%; and international applications are up 38.4% from 97 countries, including 16 that didn’t have any applications last year. While those numbers cannot be definitively linked to Sanders, others can be: September sales at the school’s online team store were up 2,544% over the same month in 2022. Every home game in 50,183-seat Folsom Field was sold out for the first time in school history.
